MLA Formatting

General Guidelines

  • Double-space the text of your paper, 
  • Use Arial 12 point font size
  • Set the margins of your document to 1 inch on all sides. 
  • Indent the first line of paragraphs one half-inch from the left margin using the Tab.
  • Leave only one space after periods or other punctuation marks.
  • Include a Works Cited page at the end on a separate page if you use in-text citations.

Formatting the First Page of Your Paper

  • Do not make a title page for your paper unless specifically requested.
  • Insert a page number in the header using the Insert> Page Number option from the menu bar. 
  • Type your last name in front of the page number and hit the Space bar.
  • Align your last name and page number to the right using the Align Right button
  • Press the Return key twice and write the title. Center the title on the page using the Center button. Do not underline, italicize, or place your title in quotation marks; write the title in Title Case (standard capitalization), not in all capital letters.
  • Press the Return key twice and start the first paragraph. 

Do not use any of the following:

  • NO borders
  • NO word art 
  • NO drawings 
  • NO ALL CAPS 
  • NO exclamation points!
  • NO underlining
  • NO bold
  • NO italics (except for references to sources or literature)
  • NO different font types, sizes or colors.
